Vitalik discusses the dilemma of decentralized social networks: How can network effects be broken?

Abstract generation in progress

【Blockchain Rhythm】Ethereum co-founder Vitalik recently shared his thoughts on decentralized social media.

He mentioned that over the past two years, he has mainly used Farcaster and has recently begun to delve deeper into this field for two reasons. First is the current situation—Twitter’s discussion quality is declining and it is no longer suitable for hosting global conversations; the market needs more diverse options. Second is a more fundamental challenge, the so-called “network effect.” No matter how excellent a product is, it cannot sustain itself if it lacks a larger user base, even if it has more advanced algorithms and better privacy protections; everything remains theoretical.

He believes Firefly has found a breakthrough. This product has two major features: it is a decentralized social media platform itself, and it also acts as an entry point for multiple protocols. Users can access the Twitter ecosystem through it, as well as enter the Farcaster ecosystem, without needing to switch platforms frequently. This clever design addresses the key obstacle to the development of Web3 social— the network effect dilemma. In other words, it reduces the cost of user migration, giving high-quality products the opportunity to gradually accumulate new ecosystem participants without losing their existing user base.

Vitalik has started using Farcaster, so I better hurry up and try it out before I miss the next opportunity...

Vitalik is right, Twitter is indeed becoming more and more like a cesspit, but I still have some doubts about the multi-protocol aggregation approach like Firefly... Can it really solve the cold start problem?

Vitalik's analysis this time is okay, but to be honest, the hurdle of network effects is really tough. No matter how excellent the product is, if no one uses it, it's all for nothing. Firefly's multi-chain entry point looks good, but I don't know if it can truly break the deadlock...

The idea of Firefly is pretty good, but to be honest, the biggest hurdle is the user base. No matter how advanced the technology is, it can't save the cold start dilemma...

Vitalik has started using Firefly, which indicates... Multi-protocol aggregation is indeed a way to break through; otherwise, relying solely on network effects makes it really difficult to turn things around.

Bro, this is the bottom reversal signal. I really believe in Firefly's breakout method.

Network effects, to put it simply, are a dead end. Unless you can bring in existing users all at once, even the best product is useless.
